Troy Smith

Aviation Safety Officer

Troy Smith currently serves as the Aviation Safety Officer for Leidos Company supporting worldwide Department of Defense (DoD) contracts and has served as a mission pilot in King Air 350 aircraft. In February 2019, Troy retired from the FBI as a Supervisory Special Agent managing the Aviation Support Unit responsible for aviation safety, training and maintenance programs. During his FBI service, Smith held aviation safety responsibilities for 12 years at FBI headquarters and was assigned to the San Francisco Field Office for nine (9) years working organized crime violations. There, he served as an FBI mission pilot piston and turbojet aircraft, check airman, standardization pilot and adjunct faculty at the FBI Academy.  

While serving as an Aviation Safety Professional, Smith developed and provided oversight of the Safety Management Systems (SMS) at both the FBI and Leidos. Accomplishments included completing several International Standards for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) audits (Stage I, II, and III), maintained a “Gold Standard” status as administered by the U.S. Government-General Services Administration, developed organization-wide policies related to aviation operations, conducted Line Operations Safety Audits (LOSA), developed CRM training programs and conducted aircraft accident investigations.  

In 2012, Smith received the first Capt. Eugene Cernan Bombardier Aviation Safety Award and the 2016 Airborne Law Enforcement Association Safety Award. Smith has CFII and ATP certificates, and actively serves in the Prince William County, Virginia Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
