Bird/Wildlife (B/W) strikes in aviation are common. The estimated cost to operators is $4 billion annually. Many pilots, when confronted with mitigating the B/W hazard, feel there is not much that can be done to reduce the risk. In fact, B/W strikes have become so common many aviation professionals have accepted there is a risk. This presentation will cover the following: past mishaps caused by B/W; historical review of risk reduction in Aviation; design criteria of aircraft to resist B/W damage; B/W behavior; airports responsibility in reducing the risk to aircraft; importance of reporting B/W strikes, tools available to pilots to mitigate the B/W hazards; and initiatives in progress to educate and mitigate the B/W strike hazards.
