One emerging way to normalize excellence is to develop sophisticated algorithms that calculate a single numerical score that indicates the safety performance of a flight department. Such an algorithm not only helps us monitor our SMS, but also helps justify funding new staff positions or the purchase of new technology. The algorithm should also have the ability to run what-if scenarios to assess how changes to input variables may impact overall safety, making it a predictive tool that helps flight department managers make decisions.
