This presentation explores the concepts of Emotional Intelligence and Safety Culture, highlighting the importance of both for highly effective teams. Emotional Intelligence is a form of social intelligence where each person has a unique set of skills to perceive their own emotional state and that of others, understand these emotional states, and manage them in constructive ways to achieve desired objectives. Safety Culture is a form of organizational culture where safety is fully embraced as a core value by everyone on the team. To achieve and maintain a positive safety culture, it is imperative for team members to effectively communicate, promote a safe environment for contrary opinions, and resolve issues of conflict constructively. When juxtaposed, emotional intelligence appears to offer enhancing possibilities for safety culture.
