Pilots, especially those of a particular generation, have a healthy amount of bravado that can keep them from debriefing after a flight – especially after a close call. That was the case for Lou Nemeth and his two co-pilots following a harrowing flight over the Pacific on a Learjet 35 that could have just as easily ended in disaster. It wasn’t until many years later that they finally discussed the events of a flight that shaped three flying careers. With this story as the backdrop, Lou explores the life lessons from the incident about the power of and the connection between post-flight debriefing and crew resource management (CRM) competency and the freedom of putting your ego aside to learn, apply, and share – the very foundations of Safety Standdown.
