Shelby Balogh
Principal Analytics Engineer & Data Science Safety Leader
GE Aerospace
Shelby Balogh works as a Principal Analytics Engineer and Data Science Safety Leader at GE Aerospace, where he has led GE’s C-FOQA program since 2015. He currently serves on the NBAA Safety Council, co-chairs the ICAO/CAST FDM Common Taxonomy Team, collaborates with Northeast Safety Roundtable, and has presented at several safety seminars and conferences.
Growing up in the pacific northwest, Shelby’s pursuit of aviation led him to attend the University of North Dakota where he earned a bachelor’s degree in aviation with a major in aeronautics. After graduation, he flew as an instructor at UND and then as first officer on the Q400 at Horizon Airlines. He subsequently returned to UND, taught aviation courses as a lecturer in the Aerospace department and completed his Master of Science in Aviation.
Shelby’s thesis research focused on developing a methodology using FOQA data to identify general aviation flights that had an elevated risk for loss of control in-flight. Developments from his research were later incorporated into the National General Aviation Flight Information Database (NGAFID), a safety program under the FAA’s ASIAS initiative.
Shelby currently resides in Austin, TX, and is the proud father of four children. Outside of work, he enjoys riding dirt bikes and motocross.
